Intermission Books: Crea tu propia antología. Cómo curar y construir una colección que refleje tu mundo

This talk explores rare and out-of-print books as more than collectible objects but rather as cultural traces, personal archives, and ways of constructing identity. Drawing from the curatorial approach behind intermission books, the session looks at how collections are built through obsession, intuition, visual sensitivity, and research.
We will discuss the difference between simply selling books and building a curatorial language: how certain titles disappear, why some books become culturally significant over time, and how collections create unexpected dialogues between photography, music, art, underground culture, fashion, cinema, and independent publishing.
The talk also reflects on the book as an object, its materiality, design, sequencing, and presence. And on collecting as a practice of memory, preservation, and storytelling.
At its core, the session proposes that every specialized library becomes an indirect self-portrait: a map of personal influences, fascinations, and ways of seeing the world.

intermission books is a Mexico City based rare and out-of-print bookstore founded by Isabel Maciel & Fher Mendiola, focused on photography, art, music, fashion, counterculture, underground publishing, and independent print culture. Through carefully curated selections, the project explores books as cultural artifacts and living archives. Objects that preserve visual histories, subcultural movements, and overlooked narratives. Specializing in hard-to-find publications, artist books, vintage magazines, ephemera, and cult editions, intermission books develops a curatorial approach shaped by visual research, collecting culture, and cross-disciplinary references.
